What is GIA certification?

GIA certification refers to a diamond grading report issued by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), one of the world's most respected and well-known gemological laboratories. The GIA developed the 4Cs (carat weight, cut, colour, and clarity) grading system, now the industry standard for evaluating diamonds and other gemstones.

A GIA certification provides a detailed analysis of a diamond's characteristics, including measurements, the 4Cs (for round brilliant diamonds), polish, symmetry, fluorescence, and any inclusions or blemishes. The certification helps ensure the diamond's quality is accurately and consistently assessed, giving buyers confidence in their purchase.

How rare are pink diamonds?

Pink diamonds are quite rare compared to other diamond colours. They make up only a small fraction of the total diamonds mined worldwide. Some say they are as rare as blue diamonds.

Most natural pink diamonds have been sourced from the now-closed Argyle Mine in Western Australia, the world's primary source of pink, as well as other fancy-coloured diamonds like blue and violet. The closure of the Argyle Mine has further increased the rarity and demand for pink diamonds.

How are loose pink diamonds graded?

Loose pink diamonds are graded using the same 4Cs system as other diamonds. However, for fancy-coloured diamonds like pink, colour is the most crucial factor. Colour grading involves evaluating the hue (the dominant colour), saturation (the intensity of colour), and tone (the lightness or darkness of the colour).

The GIA uses a grading scale ranging from Fancy Light to Fancy Deep or Fancy Vivid to describe the colour intensity. Additionally, the clarity, which assesses internal and external imperfections, and the cut, which influences the diamond's sparkle and symmetry, also impact pink diamonds' overall quality and value.
